Amanda Miller has been volunteering at MVCH over the last year, and also works at Monte Vista Elementary here in Las Cruces. She invited James Vonbehren and I to come to the school to pick up some donations last Friday afternoon and meet the children on the leadership council that raised these donations, who are from 2nd to 5th grades. When we got there Amanda introduced us to Mrs. Covey, the school Guidance Counselor, and we had a good chat about the Camp and homelessness before they led us to the auditorium. Class after class of children filed in, all bright and shiny faced and full of energy. They had a projection screen on the stage that was hooked up to Wii station, and soon enough music started thumping and those kids all got up and danced with the video game characters. They even got some of the teachers to do a dance off, it was totally awesome!
We got to meet the 13 children that helped make the “Paws for the Cause” event happen for Camp Hope, and thanked them for their contribution, and Amanda handed out certificates to each of them that I had also had a chance to sign. The kids then led us to a hallway packed full of giant garbage bags stuffed full of rolls of toilet paper, probably six or seven in all. And they had collected several shopping bags full of different kinds of batteries as well. The kids helped us load everything into James’ van, and we thanked them all again. This is the second elementary school in Las Cruces, Hillrise Elementary also had a fundraiser for us, and it is absolutely astounding to see what these kids can do when they put their minds and hearts to it.
Thank you to Mrs. Coca and Mrs. Haan for helping to facilitate this student project, and thanks to 13 awesome kids and Monte Vista Elementary for helping to support the homeless in Las Cruces!
