Senate Finance Committee Still Working on State Budget
The Senate Finance Committee has been working on House Bill 2 (HB2), the state budget bill, this week. We do not yet know whether Senate Finance will increase funding for Rapid ReHousing and Housing Stability Performance Awards. The Committee should release its version of HB2 by the end of the day today. Thank you everyone who has made calls to the committee members over the last week. In other legislative news, Senator Bill O’Neill’s Senate Bill 124 has been stuck in the Senate for several weeks now. This bill would have added crimes committed against people because they are homeless to the state’s hate crime statute. Even if SB124 was brought up for a vote and passed, it is very unlikely it would be able to make it through the House before the end of the session.

President Signs Violence Against Women Act

Yesterday President Obama signed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization bill. The bill included provisions to ensure that lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual individuals, as well as immigrant and Native American survivors, will be covered by VAWA’s protections. The legislation also expands federal housing programs covered by VAWA housing protections and requires public housing agencies and subsidized housing owners to give residents notice of VAWA rights and to adopt emergency transfer plans for residents who need to move because of victimization.
